Securing housing in a city known for sky-high rents is proving difficult for newly arrived immigrants. Of the six people City Limits spoke to about their recent searches, only one was able to find and rent a room; another is paying a coworker to sleep on a sofa, and the rest are staying in overcrowded spaces with friends of friends or acquaintances.
It was not immediately clear how the Adams Administration will proceed in challenging New York City’s unique right to shelter. A formal request is due in state court next week.
City Limits spoke with several of the immigrants being transferred from the Holiday Inn Manhattan downtown to the new, large congregate shelter on Randall’s Island, a group that included a pregnant woman and asylum seekers on crutches, among others.
“By not requiring schools to have genders and sexualities alliances, or pushing for inclusive curriculum in all schools, the DOE is refusing to take important steps proven to increase the health and safety of students.”
The public will likely learn in October if challenges to rent stabilization—from landlords and trade groups including the Community Housing Improvement Program and Rent Stabilization Association—will proceed before the U.S. Supreme Court.
