We are your trusted local news source, informing and empowering communities to create a more just city.
We believe that everyone deserves open access to essential information. We have no paywall, and our reporting is always free to all. We are committed to serving our diverse readership, lifting community voices, and providing bilingual Spanish-language reporting.
We rely on the generosity of our readers to support our nonprofit investigative journalism so everyone can benefit.
Our legacy is built on reporting that elevates the underlying issues of housing and homelessness:
City Within a City: Covering NYCHA, bridges the news and information gap in the largest public housing community, empowering NYCHA residents to shape the future of their community.
City on the Edge, covering climate change and the challenges New York faces at the intersection of housing and the environment, highlights opportunities to be better prepared for the future.
Our Homeless Shelter Tracker led to the City Council passing legislation for more comprehensive reporting by agencies sheltering New Yorkers.
Informed citizens are critical for a healthy, thriving democracy. Since 2014, our paid internship program, CLARIFY News, has introduced NYC students to the power of public-service journalism.
This initiative not only gives students real-world work, civics, and writing experience, it can also have a significant downstream impact on the students and society.
Help us empower youth through this unique training program for public service journalism, and build a pipeline of diverse journalists for future newsrooms.
