After a tally of machine ballots, Joseph Kasper leads Paul Vallone, the scion of a Democratic political dynasty and a term-limited city councilmember, by more than 1,700 votes in the 3rd Municipal District, which covers a broad swath of south and central Queens.
If passed, the proposed state amendment would require lawmakers to consider the environment in making legislative decisions, and New Yorkers would be able to sue if they believe their rights to a healthy environment are being violated.

On Tuesday, New Yorkers will head to the polls to cast ballots for New York City’s next mayor, comptroller, public advocates, borough presidents and City Council members. Some voters will also be asked to choose from a slate of judicial nominees. Below is an overview of those on the ballot Nov. 2.
It’s been nearly a year since Democratic frontrunner Eric Adams officially kicked off his campaign for mayor and seven months since his Republican opponent Curtis Sliwa entered the race. New York City has been in election mode ever since.
“The Manhattan Democratic Party is proud to support the selection by the 30th Senate District Committee of Cordell Cleare as their Democratic Nominee for the New York State Senate,” the party said in a Saturday evening release.
Felicia Singh, a teacher who triumphed in the Democratic Party’s crowded primary in June, will square off with Queens Republican Party Chairwoman Joann Ariola on Nov. 2. The district includes parts of the Rockaway peninsula, Howard Beach, Belle Harbor, Woodhaven, and South Ozone Park.
The Democratic nominee for mayor says he wants to convert shuttered lodgings outside Manhattan into 25,000 units of supportive and permanently affordable housing. While his plan is light on details, it’s excited housing advocates.
