Some in Sunset Park worry their experience of random violence will invoke a response more focused on carceral measures than addressing structural inequalities that shape public safety. “When I think about safety here, I think of how we need stimulus relief bills, unemployment and healthcare,” one local resident told City Limits. “Not police.”
Those who’ve tried to use the service in recent weeks say there haven’t been enough hotel rooms to meet demand. They report delays in obtaining a room, sometimes three days or more, even as the CDC recently cut its recommended isolation time down to five days.
As the number of COVID cases rises across the city again, some parents want the DOE and other schools across the city to restore a remote learning option. Mayor Bill de Blasio has resisted, saying getting kids back to school in-person is essential to overcoming pandemic learning loss, and pointing to low transmission rates in city classrooms.
