The next mayor faces both challenges and opportunities.
While the majority of primary winners are Democrats who will not have challengers in the fall, Republican and third-party candidates are running in a handful of races, including the Staten Island borough president’s election and Council contests in Districts 15,19, 23, 24, 32 and 50.
In three primary races, all for City Council seats, the likely winner will be someone other than the candidate who led on election night, according to a City Limits analysis of the city.
In a motion filed on Thursday, lawyers at the Bronx Defenders say that police department training documents may be instructing officers to illegally use sealed arrest records.
Of the three primaries in which current Manhattan Council members faced challengers, the 9th Council District race is the only one in which the incumbent appears to have been defeated.
Officials were “trying to satisfy expectations of quick results with a new way of voting,” BOE’s deputy executive director said of the botched ballot count.
The Board of Elections released new preliminary numbers in the Democratic mayoral primary Wednesday, its second try at calculating ranked choice voting results for ballots that were cast in person last week. More than 124,000 absentee votes have yet to be tallied.
The latest unofficial count—which had yet to include more than 124,000 absentee ballots—showed former Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia gaining on front runner Eric Adams, though the BOE later said there was a discrepancy in the tally. The final results in the mayoral race aren’t expected for another couple of weeks.
Eric Adams predicted victory in New York City’s Democratic primary for mayor Tuesday, telling supporters he was confident he won the June 22 election for the city’s top job.
“When voters voted for ranked-choice voting, we voted for it with the understanding that there’d be two years of city-wide education, which never came,” said Christian Amato, who has been polling Bronx residents on their awareness of the ranked-choice system.
The event, hosted by NBC New York, Telemundo and Politico, featured slightly different questions than many of those asked in previous debates. Of course, ardent debate watchers will note that many of the candidates’ answers were not exactly new, but the format did elicit some interesting moments.
