“Until today, the NYPD has been using private information from sealed arrests in over a dozen of their interconnected surveillance databases, and has trained its officers that it is okay to violate the law,” said Niji Jain, an attorney at the Bronx Defenders.
“The Manhattan Democratic Party is proud to support the selection by the 30th Senate District Committee of Cordell Cleare as their Democratic Nominee for the New York State Senate,” the party said in a Saturday evening release.
Felicia Singh, a teacher who triumphed in the Democratic Party’s crowded primary in June, will square off with Queens Republican Party Chairwoman Joann Ariola on Nov. 2. The district includes parts of the Rockaway peninsula, Howard Beach, Belle Harbor, Woodhaven, and South Ozone Park.

Sliwa, who is unlikely to win the mayor’s race because of the high numbers of Democrats in New York, criticized Adams’ hobnobbing with city elites and trendy teenage TikTokers, claiming that the Brooklyn Borough President was more fixed on “keeping up with the Kardashians” and “raising the roof” than he was on the issues facing the city.
“This is going to be a place where we welcome business and not turn into the dysfunctional city that we have been for so many years,” Adams said, discussing a multi-pronged plan that includes tax incentives and zoning changes to woo growing industries like cybersecurity and blockchain, and offer free or subsidized childcare for parents.
In the weeks between July 12 and Aug. 23, nearly a third of the more than 6,000 contributions to both Eric Adams and Curtis Sliwa came from donors outside the five boroughs.
While virtually anyone can file a petition with the state to run as an independent in a special election like this one, the Democratic nominee in this race will be selected through the Manhattan Democratic Party’s competitive county committee process, instead of a primary election.
Hochul announced Thursday that she would be tapping state Sen. Brian Benjamin, who represents a number of Manhattan neighborhoods including Harlem, for the role of lieutenant governor. Benjamin is the third big pick to recently join the Hochul administration.
