FYI: City Comptroller William Thompson Jr. has yet another suggestion for city agencies looking to cut: Get rid of the uniforms. Thompson released audits this morning of the Sanitation and Corrections Departments, arguing that the agencies could save a collective $10.5 million by substituting civilian workers for uniformed ones in some positions. Thompson says Sanitation can save $5.8 million a year by turning over 313 jobs to civilians, including tasks like monitoring compliance with dumping and storage laws. Corrections, meanwhile, could save $4.7 million by flipping 167 non-incarceration jobs that handle administrative, maintenance and transportation tasks. Both agencies responded to the audits by saying they largely agreed with the Comptroller’s findings. [5/22/03]
