The Federal Emergency Management Agency on Friday announced that it had approved a request by the government of Puerto Rico to extend the Transitional Sheltering Assistance program for some 1,700 survivors of Hurricane Maria whose benefits were scheduled to end.
City Limits earlier this week reported on the worries of some 80 families in New York City faced with having to find a new place to stay after FEMA stopped paying for their hotels.
Mayor de Blasio said in a statement: “Our demands have been heard and FEMA is temporarily extending assistance for the 83 Puerto Rican families set to lose their shelter in New York City. But the fight is not over. We will continue to press FEMA to ensure these U.S. Citizens have roofs over their heads. Survivors of a natural disaster who have found temporary refuge in our city deserve nothing less.”
