After breaking with the Bronx and Queens during the race for Council speaker, Brooklyn Council members will have major positions of influence in the session now underway.
Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito on Wednesday awarded the borough delegation—which backed her against Manhattan’s Dan Garodnick—the chair of 15 of the 37 Council committees, including the powerful Land Use Committee, which will be chaired by David Greenfield.
Jumaane Williams will chair Housing and Building, Vincent Gentile will lead Oversight and Investigations, Stephen Levin will oversee General Welfare, Antonio Reynoso heads Sanitation, Mark Treyger is in charge of Resiliency and Recovery and Darlene Mealy chairs Civil Rights.
Rafael Espinal (Consumer Affairs), Inez Barron (Higher Education), Carlos Menchaca (Immigration), Robert Cornegy (Small Business), Alan Maisel (Standards and Ethics), Laurie Cumbo (Women’s Issues) and Mathieu Eugene (Youth Services) also were named to committee chairs.
Chaim Deutsch was named the sole member of the subcommittee on non-public schools. Brad Lander was previously named chair of the committee on Rules, Privileges and Elections.
