A new report released by the New York City Nonprofits Project shows that the nonprofit industry has grown by 57 percent over the last decade. These organizations, which range from hospitals to affordable housing developers, employ one in seven New Yorkers, more than double the manufacturing workforce, and slightly more than the staffing levels in the finance, insurance and real estate industry.

“While New York’s overall employment hardly increased at all during the 1990s, employment in the nonprofit sector grew by almost 25 percent,” found the study, called “New York City’s Nonprofit Sector.”

Over three years, the staff at the Project analyzed and surveyed the 9,078 nonprofits in the city that operate and support charitable services. The comprehensive report includes a look at the racial make-up of different nonprofit sectors, the role of pro bono contractors and the number of New Yorkers these groups serve.
