While city officials cited the importance of restrooms for all residents of the city, highlighting the needs of young children and older New Yorkers, homeless people also rely heavily on public bathrooms, but face particular difficulty in accessing them, experts and advocates say.
Whether in Ozone Park, Richmond Hill, Woodhaven, Forest Hills, or Rego Park, the sentiment was the same: parks are great, but transit is needed more. If there is the opportunity for both, all the better.
“This absence of unified design and management can compound inequality. Where some areas of the city have seen the lion’s share of the city’s attention, other areas have been and are in danger of continuing to be completely left behind.”
“While these budget cuts will impact every park and every New Yorker across the city, there’s no secret who will be most impacted: New Yorkers who don’t have resources and who don’t have money to escape the summer heat. Families that depend on parks.”
Over the last several weeks, shelter residents and volunteers said they’ve seen increased enforcement around cooking and vending at the site, including an operation on Oct. 17 in which the Parks Department and NYPD confiscated canopy tents and other equipment.
“The need for parks where everyone feels welcome is vital. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the value of greenspaces, as people of all backgrounds flocked to local parks to safely exercise and socialize. And somewhere right now, there are young people whose creative juices are in search of a safe outlet.”
“This is not a story about cricket, its popularity, and whether New Yorkers would support the expansion of it. The issue here is the proper use of public parkland.”
The workforce development program allows teens to explore how city spaces can be repurposed for greater sustainability. “I feel like the High Line is one of the few green spaces that are actually accessible to the community,” said Aniyah Cameron, a Chelsea native and High Line Teens participant.
“New York City’s forested natural areas receive just 0.0042 percent of the city’s funds, basically a rounding error in New York City’s over $100 billion budget.”
