Upward Bound Career Day at Bronx Commnunity College

This Saturday, Bronx Community College will host a career fair coordinated by the Upward Bound and Talent Search Programs for participating students and families in honor of National TRiO Day, which focuses on increased access to higher education for disadvantaged students. The event will run from 10 to 3 p.m. at the school’s Gould Memorial Library Auditorium and will consist of a panel of professional speakers who will share their stories about their own career choices and how they got to where they are today. From a press release: The Upward Bound and Talent Search programs target eligible area high school students from low-income families and/or first-generation college students, whose parents did not earn a four-year degree, the opportunity to participate in academic classes, tutoring, counseling, workshops, college/cultural trip and a myriad of educational services on the Bronx Community College campus. 14 Pit Bulls Saved From Concourse Blaze

Health Watch: Maternity Forum, Free Cancer Screenings

A few health-related happenings we wanted to let our readers know about. Maternity Forum: Tomorrow, the Regional Perinatal Forum, made of up The Bronx Health Link, Montefiore Medical Center, and Jacobi Hospital, is hosting a “Patients as Partners” forum at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine focusing on pregnancy and maternity care. Physicians and other health experts will offer practical tips for women on safeguarding health before pregnancy, self-managing illnesses, and choosing and working with physicians before and after giving birth. The event will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lubin Hall, 1200 Van Nest Avenue. To register for the forum or for more information, contact Melissa Vega at (718) 904-4105.

Three Bronx Supermarkets on Violations List

(File photo by Adi Talwar)Last week, the NY Post published a list of 25 city supermarkets that racked up the highest in violation fines during 2010 from the Department of Consumer Affairs for overcharging customers, failing to properly mark items or using faulty scales to price goods.Three Bronx markets made the list of worst offenders: a Pathmark in Co-op City, a Pioneer Supermarket in Mott Haven and the Morton Williams on Jerome Avenue in University Heights. Bronx Events: Celebration of Women Entrepreneurs

The Bronx Entrepreneurs and Business Network, an independent grassroots networking group, will celebrate Women’s History Month with a spotlight on women and Bronx entrepreneurs tomorrow night at the PeaceLove Cafe in Melrose, 617 Melrose Ave. from 7-9 p.m. The event will feature a panel discussion on networking, social media and other business strategies moderated by Clarisel Gonzalez, editor and publisher of PRSUN Communications. The Bronx Sports Column: Two Bronxites Named All Big East; Boys HS Tourney Update

We’ll continue today with my twin winter sports obsessions: tracking Bronx point guards playing in the Big East and following the high school basketball playoffs.
