The City Limits Accountability Reporting Initiative for Youth (CLARIFY) is now accepting applications for the Fall 2019 semester of our Introductory Reporting Internship.
This is a 10-week paid internship opportunity for New York City high school students which teaches the essentials of news writing and reporting, including lessons on research, interviewing, media ethics, media literacy, story structure, photojournalism and more. Participants will cover civic meetings in their neighborhoods and work on news stories about issues impacting their own communities, with the chance to earn a byline and have their work published in City Limits.
In the last year alone, our youth interns covered dozens of civic events — reporting on community board and NYPD precinct councils meetings, Department of Education and MTA hearings and a press conference at City Hall — helping to fill the city’s hyper-local news vacuum. They’ve interviewed lawmakers, public officials, transit riders, cab drivers, advocates and activists. They’ve reported and wrote articles on a wide range of topics, including a Bronx school merger, a developer’s plan to build on a former contaminated factory site in Brooklyn, community anger over the city’s plan for a new jail and how a key street safety law has fallen short of its intended purpose. Click here to read more of the articles produced by our previous interns.
Fall interns will meet weekly, on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at City Limits’ offices in Harlem. No journalism experience is necessary, but applicants should have an interest in writing and current events, and should be curious about the world around them. Those who perform successfully in the program will earn a $750 stipend, and will be eligible to apply for CLARIFY’s more advanced Investigative Reporting Internship during a future semester.
To apply, please complete and submit our online application form before the Sept. 12th deadline. For questions or more information, contact deputy editor/youth program manager Jeanmarie Evelly: Jeanmarie@citylimits.flywheelstaging.com.
