Story of the Day:
A second water main break this morning on Jerome Avenue less than a mile away from where last week’s was. The Daily News reports that the break occurred around 6 a.m. and was shut off by 7:45 a.m. This break caused far less damage than last week’s, but still left two inches of water in the street. According to the Department of Environmental Protection, the two breaks are not related or an indictment of a failing water main system. Nope, simply just a freak coincidence.

Former State Senator Pedro Espada’s Bedford Park co-op is still up for sale. The Daily News’ Bob Kappstatter reports that Espada may be getting desperate to sell his former home with the beginning of his federal trial for embezzlement charges looming on Sept. 12 and that the property could be a bargain. A Gerard Ave. co-op has filed for bankruptcy due to the fact that they owe millions of dollars in unpaid property taxes. According to The Daily News, the city has foreclosed on the building and plans to transfer it to Riverdale-based Lemle & Wolff. The shareholders would stay on as tenants but lose their equity.
The Department of Parks and the Department of Environmental Protection plan to cut down as many as 211 trees around the Jerome Park Reservoir. However, a resolution passed by the City Council last year says that the city will be required to plant trees to replace every inch of wood they remove. According to the Riverdale Press, many of the trees along Sedgwick Avenue are mature with large circumferences, which means the city would have to plant thousands of trees in Community Board 8 to make up for their loss.

Officer Richard Urbina, one of the police officers involved in the ticket fixing scandal may cost prosecutors a case against a drunk driver. When Urbina busted Harry Ramirez for running a red light last May, Ramierz apparently admitted that he had been drinking. Despite the evidence, prosecutors are wary of putting Urbina on the stand due to his ties to the ticket fixing scandal. Urbina is also a witness for a second case against a drunk driver. “These cases can’t be won without him, but is it worth putting him on the stand so that he can get grilled about ticket-fixing?” a law enforcement source asked. “There’s an embarrassment factor here.”
